Questions

Common questions about learning Spanish

What is the difference between ser and estar?

Both can mean to be. Use ser for identity: Soy estudiante — I am a student. Use estar for how someone feels or where someone is: Estoy cansado — I am tired; Estoy en casa — I am at home. The distinction is not simply permanent versus temporary.

Is Spanish pronunciation hard for beginners?

Spanish spelling is close to its sound, so once you know the letter values you can read most new words correctly. The harder part is vocabulary volume, not reading.

Which Spanish words should I learn first?

Greetings, numbers, food, travel, work and family words. They appear in almost every real conversation and give you sentences you can use immediately.

How long does it take to reach a conversational level in Spanish?

There is no fixed timetable: your starting point, practice time and opportunities to speak all matter. Begin with one small goal, such as introducing yourself or ordering a meal, and practise it aloud alongside vocabulary review.
