Questions

Common questions about learning Indonesian

Is Indonesian difficult for beginners?

Indonesian uses the Latin alphabet, has no verb conjugation by person and no grammatical gender, so most of the early effort goes into vocabulary and word-building affixes.

What is the difference between di, ke and dari?

Di marks a location, ke marks movement towards something and dari marks origin. Learning them together with a place word makes the contrast easy to keep.

Which Indonesian words should I learn first?

Greetings, numbers, food, transport and everyday phrases. This is the vocabulary you use in markets, travel and simple daily conversation.

How do Indonesian affixes change a word?

One root can produce several words through prefixes and suffixes, for example ajar giving belajar and mengajar. Learning the root first makes the derived forms much easier to recognise.
