Questions

Common questions about learning German

What is the difference between kennen and wissen?

Kennen means being familiar with someone or something: Ich kenne Anna — I know Anna. Wissen is knowing a fact: Ich weiß, wo Anna wohnt — I know where Anna lives.

How do I learn German noun genders?

Always learn the article with the noun, as der Tisch rather than Tisch. Storing the gender inside the word from the start avoids relearning whole topic lists later.

Which German words should I learn first?

Greetings, numbers, food, home, work and travel words, plus the most frequent verbs. These cover everyday situations and appear in almost every later topic.

Are German compound words worth learning separately?

Learn the parts first. Once you know the components, long compounds become readable without memorising each one as a new item of vocabulary.
